About The House

The house is a 1980’s Hardie planked tiled roof dwelling. Over the years it has become run down with frequent flooding causing a third of the floor to be rotten and sagging. Wallpaper has all but come off the walls, the vinyl is floating in the bathroom and kitchen and it is a very cold house. Cladding cracks and damage has caused significant moisture to make its way into the room, the effects of which can be seen through the presence of mold and felt in the air. Not only is this home unsuitable as a place for people in our community to grow up in it is restricting the reuniting of a family. The grandparents who are in Australia (the father had a stroke and is now in a wheelchair) have been wanting to return to their “homestead” so share life with their children and grandchildren. The reason they have not been able to return home is because the grandfather has disability and needs a home with the services and access required.

We would like to be able to do all of this, build them not a house but a home that has enough room for them all, meets all the disability and access requirements and is a place where they can enjoy life together.

Our plans:

  • Add on an extra Bedroom for the Grandparents
  • Widen hallways and door ways for wheelchair access
  • Create open Bathrooms for wheelchair access
  • Give them a new kitchen
  • Put in a fire place
  • Add solar water heating
  • Replace the rotting floor
  • Re clad the home
  • replace damaged and rotten joinery
  • Paint the house, inside and out.
  • Insulate the home
  • Build a big deck to capture their view
  • Re design and furnish their home
  • Build a basketball hoop for the kids
  • Plant a veggie garden
  • Plant fruit trees
  • Landscape
